Why silver coins cost more than spot

Spot is a benchmark—not a promise that a finished coin can be bought or sold at that exact number.

Spot and retail price answer different questions

A silver spot quote is a wholesale market reference for metal, usually tied to large standardized transactions. A retail coin is a manufactured, distributed, inventoried product. Comparing the two without accounting for that supply chain can make an ordinary premium look mysterious.

The U.S. Mint does not sell American Eagle bullion coins directly to the public. It distributes them through authorized purchasers and applies a premium over the market value of the metal. Fabrication, financing, shipping, insurance, inventory risk, and dealer margin can add further cost before a coin reaches a retail buyer.

The number that matters is round-trip cost

A low advertised purchase premium does not by itself identify the lowest-cost product. The future buyback price matters too. A useful comparison records the dealer's ask, the same dealer's current bid for that exact product, payment and shipping fees, and any storage or insurance cost.

For education, RawRadar defines a simple hypothetical round-trip spread as (purchase price minus immediate buyback price) divided by purchase price. It is not a forecast: bids, premiums, taxes, and market conditions can change before a sale.

  • Ask whether the displayed price requires a particular quantity or payment method.
  • Compare the exact product—not a generic coin category—on both the buy and sell side.
  • Treat claims of guaranteed liquidity, limited time, or risk-free appreciation as warning signs.

Premiums can carry information, but not certainty

A widening retail premium may reflect demand, mint capacity, logistics, dealer inventory, or a temporary product-specific bottleneck. It does not automatically prove that wholesale silver is unavailable, nor does it guarantee a higher future spot price.

The careful conclusion is narrower: spot, retail ask, and dealer bid describe different layers of the market. Keep each timestamped and labeled before drawing a thesis from the gap.
