Silver market
Is there really a silver shortage?
Before accepting a shortage claim, identify which layer of the silver market is constrained and over what period.
Three claims that are often collapsed into one
An annual market deficit means measured demand exceeded measured supply during a defined period and methodology. An inventory decline means metal left a particular reported stock category. Retail unavailability means a specific finished product is difficult to obtain at a particular place and time. One can occur without proving the others.
The Silver Institute's 2026 outlook describes a sixth consecutive annual market deficit. That is an industry forecast built with Metals Focus research—not a declaration that all immediately deliverable silver has disappeared. Above-ground stocks, recycling, investor selling, substitution, and changes in industrial use can bridge flows or alter the balance.
Why supply can adjust slowly
The U.S. Geological Survey tracks silver as a metal produced from both primary silver mines and as a byproduct of mining other metals. When a material share of output is linked to other mining economics, a higher silver price does not necessarily create an immediate one-for-one supply response.
Demand can adjust too. Manufacturers can thrift, redesign, substitute, defer purchases, or change inventories. Forecasts therefore deserve scenario ranges and later reconciliation against reported data.
A better shortage checklist
Ask whether the claim concerns refined wholesale bars, exchange-registered stocks, fabricator feedstock, mint blanks, coins, or local dealer inventory. Then record the source, unit, date range, historical comparison, and whether the number is observed or forecast.
RawRadar does not treat a market deficit as proof of an inevitable squeeze or price target. It is one input whose price relevance depends on inventories, financing, substitution, investor behavior, and time horizon.
