How to read a metals move without chasing the headline

A price move is an observation. The explanation is a hypothesis that should survive timestamps, competing evidence, and a clear counter-case.

Start with the move you can document

Record the instrument, venue or benchmark, currency, start and end timestamps, percentage change, and nearby market events. Gold quoted in U.S. dollars is not the same observation as gold measured in another currency, a futures contract, a mining share, or a retail coin.

Avoid assigning a cause merely because a news story appeared near the move. Markets can anticipate events, react to details that differ from headlines, or move because positioning and liquidity amplify an otherwise modest surprise.

Test four evidence buckets

RawRadar reviews macro conditions, market positioning, liquidity, and the physical market separately before combining them. This reduces the temptation to force every move into a favorite narrative.

  • Macro: policy expectations, nominal and real yields, inflation data, and currency moves.
  • Positioning: futures commitments, fund flows, options, and evidence of crowded exposure.
  • Liquidity: trading session, market depth, volatility, margin, and cross-asset deleveraging.
  • Physical: benchmark premiums, fabrication constraints, inventories, and regional availability.

Publish the counter-case

A useful explanation states what evidence would weaken it. If gold rose while real yields and the dollar also rose, for example, a simple rates-and-currency account may be incomplete. If retail premiums widened while wholesale inventories were stable, the constraint may be product-specific rather than market-wide.

Good analysis can remain uncertain. RawRadar distinguishes observation, interpretation, and scenario; it does not convert a plausible story into a promise or personalized trade instruction.
